Sommeliers —My food story August —’24— 55 LINDSAY TRIVERS Lindsay Trivers is a formidable force to be reckoned with in the global sommelier ranks. Having graced various magazines and articles and taught over 2,000 aspiring sommeliers, her knowledge and passion for beverages are incomparable Lindsay Trivers came to the UAE in 2014 to join Dubai’s glittering fivestar hotel repertoire, but has made her biggest impact in the industry since launching The Tasting Class in 2015, which today, delivers more than 200 tasting experiences annually. In 2017, Lindsay made WSET wine qualifications available to both trade and consumers for the first time, and by 2021, she launched the UAE Vine Festival, the first nationwide wine festival in the Middle East. She has been entrusted by some of the biggest names in F&B for events, consulting, or training. “I was bitten by the wine bug when I moved across the country to the Canadian Rockies in search of an adventure in my early 20s,” Lindsay shared. “I was skiing by day and cocktail waitressing by night at a highend restaurant. Joining the hospitality industry was an eye-opening time in my life. I discovered new cuisines, drinks, and dining traditions from different cultures. That is where I learned there was so much more to wine than I realized, and I needed to know more. That is where I started my sommelier studies and started to travel to work in and live in the wine industry. Now, I have worked in the wine industry on five continents.” She is now synonymous with wine and spirit education and experiences in the UAE, and was recently referred to as The Wine Lady by What’s On. As a pioneer of wine education in the region, she is responsible for more than 2,000 people attaining the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) qualifications in the GCC and has recently brought Wine Scholar Guild Courses to the UAE. She has developed proprietary training courses for the specific needs of Dubai’s fast-expanding F&B industry. Her knowledge of the wine and spirit worlds and ability to deliver information to all audiences in an interesting and informative way have led to some of the biggest names in the beverage industry trusting her with their brands. Lindsay holds qualifications with the Wine and Spirit Education Trust, The Court of Master Sommeliers, Wine Scholar Guild, Auckland University of Technology, and has also studied beer in Belgium under Master Beer Sommelier, Sofie Vanraflegehm. “I moved to Australia on a working holiday visa, hungry to learn about wine. In Margaret River, I worked at wineries daily and spent my free time visiting other wineries. I had like-minded people to train alongside and access to mentorship from winemakers. Then, in Melbourne, I worked at The City Wine Shop, surrounded by some of the country’s top (current and future) sommeliers. They helped me train for The Court of Master Sommeliers exams.” “I found my soul mates by pursuing wine professionally,” beams this indomitable Wine Lady.
