ABC has invested over $100 million since 1973 in research with leading universities and experts to uncover almonds’ benefits for human health, food safety, and farming practices. ABC pioneers advancements in almond production, focusing on water management, bee health, tree and soil health, pest and disease management, air quality, and zero waste. Since 1982, nearly 80% of California almond farms have adopted micro-irrigation, reducing water usage by 33% between the 1990s and 2010s. In 2018, ABC’s Board of Directors set ambitious goals for water use, zero waste, air quality, and pest management under the Almond Orchard 2025 Goals. These goals aim to reduce the water needed to grow a pound of almonds by 20% and achieve zero waste in orchards by optimizing the use of all by-products.
