Today, as the largest vegetable commodity board, we are proud to be recognized as an innovator in the produce industry. Potatoes USA strengthens demand for potatoes in the U.S. and in thirteen markets abroad. As the marketing organization for the 2,000 potato farming families operating in the United States and importers, we promote five main potato products: fresh table-stock potatoes, fresh chipping potatoes, seed potatoes, frozen potato products, and dehydrated potato products. We provide culinary potato inspiration to key audiences, as well as useful tools, education, and support to get more people eating potatoes in more ways. Through effective market-driven strategies that focus on the greatest opportunities, Potatoes USA is proving that no matter where the consumer lives, potatoes offer a world of possibilities. Potatoes are a staple in many homes, and rightfully so. They’re easily accessible, affordable, and versatile. An average 5.3 oz potato has: only 110 calories, 30% of your daily vitamin C, and 15% of your daily potassium (620 mg per serving, which is more than a medium-sized banana with 422 mg per serving). Potatoes are also gluten-free, fat-free, and affordable. What more can you ask for from a vegetable? American potatoes are grown from certified seed potatoes developed by world-class potato breeding programs and must pass the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s seed certification system. Fun Fact: There are over 200 varieties of potatoes sold commercially throughout the USA, fitting into seven potato types: Russet, Red, White, Yellow, Blue/Purple, Fingerling, and Petite. According to the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization, potatoes produce more nutritious food more quickly, on less land, and in harsher climates than any other major crop. Potatoes play an important role in food security, particularly for developing countries. Half of the world’s food energy needs are supplied by potatoes, rice, wheat, and corn. Potatoes are good for a healthy, sustainable earth. In fact, potatoes produce more food energy per cubic meter of water used than any other major crop and use less land per kilogram of production than most other foods.
